1901 - Born in Penonomé on the 15th of August.

1925 - Arias returned to Panama and assumed leadership of the nationalistic organization Patriotic Communal Action.

1931 - Arias led a coup that deposed Liberal President Florencio Harmodio Arosemena.

1941 - He was ousted in October, in a coup supported by the United States.

1948 - He ran for president again as the Authentic Revolutionary Party candidate and lost.

1951 - Corruption was widespread, and he was overthrown.

1968 - He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1964, then won election as the Panameñista candidate and as the standard-bearer of a five-party coalition.

1978 - Arias returned to Panama.

1984 - He again ran for president.

1988 - Died on the 10th of August in Miami due to old age.
