1965 - Archer earned his B.S. in Education from Western Michigan University and taught learning disabled children in Detroit Public Schools.
1970 - He earned his Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law.
1985 - Archer served as a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court.
1993 - Race to succeed Young, Archer did not win a majority of the black vote.
1994 - Served as mayor of Detroit.
2001 - Archer refused to run for re-election.
2004 - In October, he was appointed as legal guardian for civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
