- Arber studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, the University of Geneva, and the University of Southern California.
1960 - He served on the faculty at Geneva, when he became professor of microbiology at the University of Basel.
- He proposed that when bacteria defend themselves against attack by viruses, they use selective enzymes which cut the DNA chain of the infecting virus.
1978 - Was co-recipient with Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Othanel Smith of the United States of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
1984 - Author of the book, Genetic Manipulation: Impact on Man and Society.
