1892 - Born on the 6th of September in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
1900 - At the age of 18 he won a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge. He graduated with a first class degree in Natural Sciences.
1920 - After returning from active service in World War I, he became assistant demonstrator in experimental physics at the Cavendish Laboratory.
1924-1936 - He was professor of physics at King's College London.
1924 - Used the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio broadcast transmitter at Bournemouth, England.
1936-1939 - Professor of natural philosophy at Cambridge University.
1939-1949 - He was secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
1941 - He was Knighted.
1947 - He received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the knowledge of the ionosphere, which led to the development of radar.
1949-1965 - He was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University.
1965 - Died on the 21st of April in England.
