Ammann, Othmar Hermann
1879 - Born on March 26th in Schaffhausen, Northern Switzerland. Swiss structural engineer and designer of numerous long suspension bridges.
1897-1902 - Studied civil engineering at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
1904 - Ammann immigrated to the United States, where he helped design railroad bridges.
1931-1964 - He designed some of America's greatest suspension bridges, including the George Washington Bridge (1067 m/3500 ft) in New York, Golden Gate Bridge (1280 m/4200 ft) in San Francisco, and Verrazano Narrows Bridge (1298 m/4260 ft) in New York, each in its day the longest span in the world.
- President Lyndon B Johnson awarded him the National Medal of Science.
