1844 - He was admitted to the bar of Portland, Maine, but he never practiced there, but in Massachusetts.
1845 - Admitted to the Massachusetts bar and the first African American admitted to practice law in the United States.
- Allen became a justice of the peace in Massachusetts until after the Civil War.
1872 - He was elected judge of the Inferior Court of Charleston.
1873 - He moved to South Carolina and was elected a judge.
- During the Civil War, Allen moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he believed his legal skills could be more useful.
