1970 - Alexander moved back to Tennessee and become a campaign manager for Memphis dentist Winfield Dunn's successful gubernatorial bid.
1974 - He was the Republican candidate for Governor of Tennessee.
1978 - He ran for the election and made a name for himself by walking across the state wearing a black plaid shirt.
1979-1987 - He was been the 45th Governor of Tennesse.
1982 - He made a history by becoming the first person re-elected to a second 4-year term defeating Knoxville mayor Randy Tyree.
1987 - He was constitutionally ineligible for a 3rd term and stepped down from the governorship on January.
1988-1991 - He became the president of the University of Tennessee.
1991-1993 - He became the U.S. Secretary of Education under President George H.W. Bush.
