1930 - Ahmed was born in Kendua, Netrakona on February 1, 1930.
1951 - Received his B.A. in Economics from Dhaka University.
1952 - Obtained his M.A. in International Relations from Dhaka University.
1954 - Entered the Civil Service of Pakistan, successfully completed his training at the Lahore Civil Service and took a special course on Public Administration at the University of Oxford.
1960 - Became the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Dhaka and Barisal and as District and Sessions Judge of Comilla and Chittagong.
1967 - Appointed Registrar of the Dhaka High Court.
1972 - Became a Judge of the High Court of Bangladesh on January 20, 1972.
1973-1974 - Served as Chairman of the Labour Appelate Tribunal and later returned to the High Court Division as a Judge.
1978-1982 - Became a Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on February 7, 1980 and served as Chairman of Bangladesh Red Cross Society.
1984 - Became the Chairman of the National Pay Commission.
1990 - Became the Chief Justice of Bangladesh on January 14, 1990.
1996 - Elected as the President on July 23, 1996 and sworn into office on October 9, 1996.
