1986 - He became an advisor to Ahmad Shah Masood, who was engaged in anti-Soviet activities.
1988 - He was the foreign minister of the Afghan United Front government.
2001 - He was selected as Foreign Minister for the Interim Administration of Afghanistan.
2004 - He was not removed from his ministerial post after the Presidential Election.
2006 - He lost in a cabinet reshuffle on the 22nd of March.
