       - He was a bank executive and then elected as a Democrat to the United State Congress by special

             election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative Patrick H. Drewry.

1948 - He was re-elected to the twelve succeeding Congresses on the 17th of February.

1998 - He died from leukemia in Lynchburg, Virginia on the 13th of July.
