1899 - Born on the 24th of October in Taher, Algeria.
1962 - He acted in a provisional capacity as the country's first President after independence.
1943 - He became disillusioned with France when his hopes were not realized and turned to nationalism
issuing the Manifesto of the Algerian people.
1946 - He formed the nationalist Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto.
1955 - He joined the National Liberation Front in September.
1962 - He became President of the constitutional assembly on the 25th of September.
1964 - He resigned in protest at the National Liberation Front.
- He was placed under house arrest.
1976 - He was again placed under house arrest, after signing a statement opposing the country's powerful
military-backed President, Col. Houari Boumeddiene.
1984 - He received official recognition in the form of a state decoration, the Medal of Resistance on 30th of
October.
1985 - He died on the 23rd of December.
