1821 - Gustave Flaubert, born on the 12th of December in Rouen, NW France. He was a French novelist who is counted among the greatest Western novelists.
1857 - His masterpiece was Madame Bovary, a portrait of a young woman who cannot come to terms with the limitations of provincial life, which was condemned as immoral and its author (unsuccessfully) prosecuted.
1862 - 1874 - His other works include Salammbô, and La Tentation de St Antoine (The Temptation of St Anthony).
1877 - Trois contes (Three Tales) reveals his mastery of the short story.
1880 - He died of a stroke on the 8th of May, he appeared much older. He died at Croisset, but was buried in the family vault in the cemetery of Rouen.
1926 -1933 - His genius as a letter writer is apparent in the volumes of his Correspondance.
