1953 - Graduated received her B.A. from University of CAlifornia, Los Angeles.
1956 - Received her J.D. from USC Law School.
1966-1972 - Member of the California State Assembly and the 1st black woman elected to California General Assembly.
1972-1978 - Became the Member of the U.S. House of Representatives initially representing portions of Los Angeles.
- Vice-Chairman of Democratic National Convention.
1979-1980 - Represented the 4th district.
1993-1994 - Chairman of the Board of Supervisors from 1997-1998, and 2002-2003.
1992-2005 - Served as Los Angeles County Supervisor from the 2nd district.
