Baker, William Oliver

1915 - Born on the 15th of July in Chestertown.

Earned a bachelor's degree in physical chemistry from Washington College.

1938 - Earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Princeton.

1939 - Joined Bell Labs, then Bell Telephone Laboratories, as a research scientist.

1955-1973 - He was Bell Lab's vice president of research.

1973-1979 - He was the President of Bell Laboratories.

His expertise led to his appointments as a science adviser to Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Reagan.

Served as a member of the President's Science Advisory Committee.

The President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

The Federal Emergency Management Advisory Board.

1980 - Dr. Baker retired from Bell Labs as Chairman of the Board.

1988 - He received the National Medal of Science.

2003 - Received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guglielmo Marconi International Fellowship Foundation at Columbia University.

2005 - William O. Baker died on the 31st of October.
