Jowett, Benjamin
1817 - Benjamin Jowett, born on the 15th of April in Camberwell, England. He was an English scholar and theologian, Master of Balliol College, Oxford.
1838 - He gained a fellowship.
1839 - He graduated with first-class honours.
- Joined with Archibald Campbell Tait, the future Archbishop of Canterbury, in advocating certain university reforms.
1842 - He had been a tutor of Balliol and a clergyman.
1845 - 1846 - He spent the summers in Germany with Stanley, and became an eager student of German criticism and speculation.
1848 - Became general amongst the younger and more thoughtful fellows, until it took effect in the commission.
1855 - Appointed by Lord Palmerston to the Regius Professorship of Greek in autumn.
1866 - His authority in Balliol had been paramount, and various reforms in college had been due to his initiative.
1893 - Died on the 1st of October in Headley Park, Hampshire, England.
