France, Anatole

1844 - France was born in Paris, France on April 16, 1844.

1864 - Studied at the College Stanislaus and upon graduating he helped his father by working at his bookstore.

1870 - France was able to get the position of a cataloguer at Bacheline-Deflorenne and at Lemerre.

1876 - Appointed as a librarian for the French Senate.

1885 - Published "My Friend's Book" (Le Livre de mon ami), an autobiographical novel

1888-1892 - Became the literary critic of the newspaper Le Temps. His reviews were collected in four volumes under the title "On Life and Letters" (La Vie litteraire).

1893 - Published his most celebrated novel, "At the Sign of the Reine Pedauque" (La Rotisserie de la Reine Pedauque), about the life in eighteenth century France.

1896-1901 - France was elected to the French Academy. He wrote the History Contemporary (Histoire contemporaine), which comprises of prose works, is one of France's most famous creations.

1921 - Nominated and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

1924 - France died in Indre-et-Loire, France on October 12, 1924.
