1963 - Born on November 10th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mike Powell, the world record-holder in the long jump who competed for UCLA.

1985 - As a student at UCLA, his personal best was a 26-9¾ in, when he finished third at the national championships.

         - He began his collegiate season at UC Irvine and transferred to UCLA.

1987 - He also competed in the high jump, triple jump, and sprints, so he didn't focus on the long jump until after graduating.

1988 - Powell, who finished second to Lewis to win a silver medal at the Olympics.

1991 - During the world championships in Tokyo, Powell stunned Lewis and the world with a jump of 29 feet, 4½ inches, bettering Beamon's mark by 2 inches.

         - He won the Sullivan award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete for the accomplishment.

1992 - Powell, who finished second and took another silver behind Lewis.

1993-1995 - He won the world championship, with Lewis out of action, beating the second place finisher by nearly a foot and a half, and he was also the national long jump champion that year.

         - Powell won 34 straight competitions. After an indifferent season, it seemed that Powell wouldn't make the Olympic team, since he was sixth in the trials with only one jump remaining. That one jump got him into first place, though. However, he tore a groin muscle during competition in Atlanta and finished only fifth.

2003-2004 - Powell was a speed, agility and quickness consultant for the Dodgers. He has also been a corporate spokesperson and motivational speaker. Powell is also involved in the humanitarian efforts of Olympic Aid, an organization made up of Olympic Athletes who have devoted their time and efforts to helping children around the world.

2005 - Joined the Bruin track & field coaching staff.
