         - Writer who was regarded as the greatest Spanish novelist since Miguel de Cervantes.

         - His enormous output of short novels chronicling the history and society of 19th-century Spain earned him comparison with Honoré de Balzac and Charles Dickens.

1920 - Died on the 4th of January in Madrid.
