1953 - He began playing guitar by age six and made his first record at age 15. he suffered from drug and alcohol addiction during his career.
1977 – He is best remembered for his hit single, "Take This Job and Shove It", which sold over 2 million copies and inspired a motion picture of the same name. he was awarded in this year Academy of Country Music.
1985 – He was convicted of shooting a man in Hillsboro, Ohio and spent two years in prison.
1990 – His tax problems with the IRS led to his filing for bankruptcy this year.
2003 – He died this year at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was interred in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Nashville.
