1940 - He graduated high school in Port Chester, New York.

1942 - While attending Yale, he enlisted in the United States Army.

1947 - He resumed studies at Yale University and he earned a Bachelor of Arts majoring in American history.

1949 - He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

1950 - He practiced Law in Chicago.

1954 - 1955 - Served as an assistant United States Attorney.

1958 - 1961 - He served as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General heading an office fighting organized crime in Chicago.

1960 - He achieved notoriety as the Mafia-fighting Sheriff of Cook County, lllinois.

1968 - He was elected governor as a Republican against incumbent Democrat Sam Shapiro.

1969 - He served as the Governor of lllinois.

1972 - He was the Trustee that supervised the sale of the Milwaukee Road.

1987 - He was appointed by then-Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole.

1988 - He died on the 10th of May in Chicago.
