Oates, William Calvin
1833 - Born on the 30th of November in Pike County, Alabama.
1861 - He joined the Confederate Army and eventually became the commander of the 15th Alabama Infantry.
1863 - He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, leading his troops in a series of charges on Little Round Top.
- He was wounded near Petersburg, Virginia losing his right arm and ending his active service.
1868 - He served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
1870 - He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives.
1880 - He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served seven consecutive terms.
1882 - He married Sarah Toney of Eufaula.
1894 - He was elected governor of Alabama in a bitter campaign.
1898 - He served in the Spanish American War.
- He returned to his law practice and speculated in real estate.
1910 - He died on the 9th of September.
