1938 – She was born on the 16th day of June this year in Lockport, New York. He grew up in the New York countryside. She attended the same one-room school her mother attended as a child.


1959 – She won Mademoiselle College fiction award for her work “In the Old World.”


1961 – She received her M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


1964 – She wrote her first novel “With Shuddering Fall.”


1966 – She frequently anthologized short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"


1970 – Her novel them received the National Book Award this year. She has also written several books, mostly mystery novels. She also taught at the University of Windsor in Canada for ten years before moving to Princeton.


1978 – She taught humanity at Princeton University.


1993 – She was first nominated in Pulitzer Prize Award for “Black Water.”


2006 – She won her latest award in this year Chicago Tribune Literary Prize.
