1960 – He received the Moscow Mathematical Society Award for young mathematicians.

1965 – He defended a dissertation for the Doctor of Science in Physics and Mathematics degree.

1966 – He became the Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

1970 – He was recognised by the award of the Fields Medal.

1971 – He worked at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

1981 – He was elected as Full Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

1984 – He was elected as a member of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

2004 – He is the Head of the Department of geometry and topology at the Steklov Mathematical Institute.

2005 – He became one of just eight mathematicians who received both the Fields Medal and the Wolf Prize.
