1892 - Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr, born on the 21st of June in Wright City, Missouri, USA, the son of a liberally minded German Evangelical pastor, Gustav, and the brother of Helmut Richard Niebuhr. During his lifetime, he was the best-known Christian intellectual in the United States.

1910 - He attended Elmhurst College, Illinois (where today stands a large statue of him), and graduated, subsequently going to Eden Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.

1914 - He attended Yale University where he received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.

1915 - Ordained as a minister in the German Evangelical Synod of North America, he pastored a middle-class congregation in Detroit for 13 years.


1927 - His books include "Does Civilization Need Religion?".

1928 - 1960 - Served as professor of Christian ethics.

1928 - He began a career-long association with New York's Union Theological Seminary.

1931 - He married the English theologian Ursula Kessel-Compton; they had a son and a daughter.

1941 - 1943 - The Nature and Destiny of Man with 2 volumes.

1949 - Published Faith and History.

1950 - 1960 - Served as dean of Christian Ethics.

1964 - He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

1971 - Died on the 1st of June in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
