1816 – Born on the 16th of September in Bredwardine, Herefordshire.

1840 – He entered the British Museum as an assistant in the Antiquities Department.

1852 – He left the Museum to become Vice-Consul at Mitylene.

1855 – He declined the regius professorship of Greek at Oxford.

1860 – He was made British consul at Rome.

1880 – He was Yates professor of classical archaeology at University College, London.

1894 – He died on the  28th of November.
