1950 – He was born William James Murray on the 21st day of September this year in Wilmette, Illinois.
1971 – He was making pizza at Little Caesars Pizza, Evanston, Illinois this year.
1973 - He eventually became a featured player on The National Lampoon Radio Hour, aired on some 600 stations between this year and 1975.
1975 - He landed his first television role as a cast member of the ABC variety show Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell.
1977 – He won an Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy-Variety or Music Series “Saturday Night Live”.
1979 – Murray landed his first starring role with the film Meatballs. He followed up with his portrayal of famed writer Hunter S. Thompson in 1980s Where the Buffalo Roam. In the early 1980s, he starred in a string of box-office hits including Caddyshack, Stripes and Tootsie.
1980 – This year, he later revisited the troupe he started with in the TV special Bill Murray Live From the Second City. Murray also wed Margaret Kelly this year.
1984 - Murray made with Columbia Pictures in order to gain financing for his film. Ghostbusters became the highest-grossing film of 1984. Murray took four years off from acting to study French at the Sorbonne.
1988 - Murray returned to films in this year with Scrooged.
1989 – He followed up with the long-awaited sequel Ghostbusters II in this year.
1990 – He made his first and only attempt at directing when he co-helmed Quick Change with producer Howard Franklin.
1994 – He and Kelly were divorced this year.
2003 – He was nominated and won as Best Actor in several award-giving bodies like Golden Globe, Emmy, Academy and BAFTA this year.
2004 - He provided the voice of Garfield in Garfield: The Movie and marked his third collaboration with Wes Anderson in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
2005 – He announced that he would take a break from acting, as he had not had the time since his new breakthrough in the late-1990s.
