- Educated at the University of Western Ontario.
1989 - Greg Clark Award, for magazine journalism.
1990 - Canadian Science Writers' Award, for magazine journalism.
1991 - Worked as a freelance writer, a magazine editor.
- Simonds also co-wrote the book accompaniment to the controversial CBC Television documentary The Valour and the Horror.
1995 - Finalist Science in Society Children's Book Award, for "Fit to Drink".
1996 - Finalist, Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction, for "The Convict Lover", the Arthur Ellis Award for Non-Fiction and CBA Author of the year.
