1728 - Born on March 12th in Aussig, Bohemia. German painter who was perhaps the leading artist of early Neoclassicism.

1740-1744 - Mengs began to study art seriously at the age of twelve, when he accompanied his father on a trip to Rome.

         - He remained there for four years making drawings, and then returned to Dresden where he quickly achieved success as a pastel portrait painter.

1745 - He became painter to the Saxon court in Dresden and executed a large number of portraits, most in brightly coloured pastels.

1746 - During his second trip to Rome, Mengs began using oils.

1749 - Mengs had converted to Catholicism and married a young Roman woman.

         - He was highly thought of in Rome, where he was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca and held a teaching post at the Accademia del Nudo.

1779 - Died on June 29th in Rome, Italy.
