1828 – Born on November 14th in Sandusky county, Ohio. Union general of the American Civil War about whose death General Ulysses S. Grant is reported to have said, “The country has lost one of its best soldiers, and I have lost my best friend”.
1861 – McPherson was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers and held minor army assignments until the outbreak of the Civil War.
– With General H.W. Halleck in Missouri, he was assigned to General Grant’s staff as chief engineer in the Tennessee campaign and, after distinguished service at the battles of Shiloh, Tennessee.
1863 – He participated in the second advance on Vicksburg, Mississippi, and, after the city fell, was promoted to brigadier general in the regular army.
1864 – Took command of the Army of the Tennessee, which moved against Atlanta under General William T. Sherman’s supreme command.
1864 – Died on July 22nd near Atlanta, Georgia.
– After reporting to Sherman, the youthful officer was killed by a Confederate skirmisher.
