1951 – She was born on the 18th day of October of this year in Port Huron, Michigan.

1986 – She received her BA in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley.

1992 – She achieved national attention with her third novel, Waiting To Exhale, which remained on The New York Times bestseller list for many months.

1995 – Forest Whitaker turned her book into a film.

1998 – Another novel was turned into a movie this year.  She also married Jonathan Plummer this year

2005 - Her most recent work, The Interruption of Everything, was published on July 19 of this year.

2006 – She filed for a divorce to her husband in this year.

2007 – She sued Plummer and his lawyer for $40 million citing an intentional strategy to embarrass and humiliate her during the divorce proceedings.
