1923 – After quitting school at 13, Frank McCourt alternated between odd jobs and petty crime in an effort to feed himself, his mother, and four surviving brothers and sisters.
1929 – At 19, he returned to the United States and worked at odd jobs until he was drafted into the United States Army at the onset of the Korean War.
1967 – He received his M.A. in English at Brooklyn College.
