1867 - Winsor McCay, born on the 26th of September in Spring Lake, Michigan, USA. He was a prolific artist and pioneer in the art of comic strips and animation. His comic strip work has influenced generations of artists, including creators such as Moebius, Chris Ware, William Joyce, and Maurice Sendak.
1886 - He was sent to Cleary's Business College in Ypsilanti, Michigan to learn to be a businessman.
1889 - He moved to Chicago, intending to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, but due to lack of money had to find employment instead.
1904 - He worked as an illustrator on various newspapers before joining the New York Herald to make his first successful strip, Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend, which was filmed by Edison.
1905 - He drew under his pseudonym, but used his own name for the successful Little Nemo in Slumberland.
1914 - His animated films include Gertie the Dinosaur.
1918 - The Sinking of the Lusitania, the first dramatic/documentary cartoon.
1934 - Died on the 26th of July.
