1937 - Born on September 29th in Tokyo. Koichiro Matsuura is the director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

1959 - Matsuura was educated at the Law Faculty of the University of Tokyo and at the Faculty of Economics of Haverford College (Pennsylvania, USA) and began his diplomatic career.

1988 - Director-General of the Economic Cooperation Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1990 - Director-General of the North American Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs.

1994 - Served as Japan's Ambassador to France.

1998 - He has also served as the Chairperson of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.

1999 - Matsuura was appointed on November 12th to serve a six-year term as Director-General of UNESCO by the Organization's General Conference.

2005 - He was re-elected to a second term in October.

2006 - A graduate of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa), University of Santo Tomas, Philippines.
