1958 - He attended St. Patrick's Boys School in Anderston, Scotland.

1960 - He became an apprentice sheet-metal worker in Scotland.

1966 - He became involved in the Sheet Metal Workers Trade Union and joined the Labour Party.

1970 - He was a shop steward in AUEW (Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union).

1973 - He was elected as a councilor on "Glasgow Corporation".

1975 - He was elected to the Parliament of United Kingdom.

         - He served as a organizer with the National Union of the Public Employees (NUPE).

1976 - He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Glasgow Springburn.

1987 - He became chairman of the Scottish Grand Committee.

1997 - He was appointed as Chairman of of Ways and Means.
