1950 - John Paul Manley, born on the 5th of January in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian lawyer, businessman and politician.

1971 - He received a BA from Carleton University.

1976 - Received an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa.

1978 - He articled as a law clerk to Bora Laskin, the Chief Justice of Canada, and was called to the Ontario bar.

1988 - 2004 - He is a former Liberal Member of Parliament for Ottawa South.

1993 - 2003 - Served as a Cabinet Minister.

2000 - He was shuffled to Minister of Foreign Affairs on the eve of the 00' election.

2001 - He was named Time Magazine's "Canadian newsmaker of the year".

2002 - In January, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and given special responsibility for security in response to 9/11.

       - In May, Chretien appointed him as Minister of Finance, following the resignation of Paul Martin.

2004 - He was named to the Board of Directors of telecommunications firm Nortel Networks.

2005 - In January, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

       - He is also chair of the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America, a project of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations.

       - In March, the Task Force released a report that advocated a North American union, an economic union between Canada, Mexico and the United States which would resemble the European Union.
