1618 - Born in Westphalia to Dutch parents whose real name was van der Faess. Dutch-English painter.
1637 - He trained in Haarlem and became a Master of the Haarlem Guild.
1647 - He became a freeman of the Painter-Stainers’ Company and his early English paintings were influenced by Van Dyck and Dutch baroque style.
1660 - Charles II appointed Lely his Principal Painter in Ordinary.
1662 - He became an English subject.
1680 - Lely received the honor of a knighthood.
- He died in the same year and was buried in St. Paul's Church in Covent Garden, the fashionable area where he had lived and worked.
