1957 - Born on March 20th in Atlanta, Georgia. American director.

1979 - Graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

1980-1984 - He made a controversial short, "The Answer", a reworking of D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation - a ten minute film.

         - Lee went on to produce a 45 minute film "Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads", which won a student academy award. However, success did not mean money and Lee's next film, 'The Messenger', was somewhat biographical.

         - Graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

1986 - Made a name for himself with the hit independent film "She's Gotta Have It", a frank comedy about the many lovers of an independent Brooklyn woman.

1988 - Lee has become a well-known, intelligent, and talented film maker. His next movie was "School Daze", which was set in a historically black school, and focused mostly on the conflict between the school and the Fraternities, of which he was a strong critic, portraying them as materialistic, irresponsible and uncaring.

1993 - Married to Tonya Lewis Lee on October 2nd.

1997 - Wrote memoir "Best Seat in the House: A Basketball Memoir".

2000 - He continued to tell stories with racial themes and New York settings, including the Brooklyn drama "Do the Right Thing", the jazz-tinged "Mo' Better Blues" with Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes, the interracial romance "Jungle Fever" with Snipes and Anabella Sciorra, the biopic "Malcolm X" starring Washington and based in part on the book by Malcolm X and Alex Haley, "Summer of Sam" with John Leguizamo, and the controversial racial satire "Bamboozled" with Mos Def.

2004 - Member of the jury at the Venice Film Festival.

2006 - Lee and Denzel Washington reunited for the mainstream heist thriller "Inside Man".

         - Was voted the 48th Greatest Director of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
