1922 - Born on January 9th in Raipur, Kabir Wala, Multan, Pakistan. Indian-born American biochemist.

1945 - Khorana lived in India until the award of a Government of India Fellowship made it possible for him to go to England and he studied for a Ph. D. degree at the University of Liverpool.

1948-1949 - He obtained his Ph.D. at Liverpool.

         - Khorana spent a postdoctoral year at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zurich with Professor Vladimir Prelog.

1951 - He began research on nucleic acids during a fellowship at the University of Cambridge under Sir Alexander Todd.

1952-1959 - He held fellowships and professorships in Switzerland at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the universities of British Columbia, Canada, and Wisconsin, United States.

         - Har Gobind Khorana was married to Esther Elizabeth Sibler, who is of Swiss origin.

1960 - Khorana moved to the Institute for Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin.

1968 - Shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research that helped to show how the nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry the genetic code of the cell, control the cell's synthesis of proteins.

1970 - Khorana made another contribution to genetics, when he and his research team were able to synthesize the first artificial copy of a yeast gene.

1971 - He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
