1905 - Born on the 18th of October in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire.
1957 - 1961 - He was previously elected to the French parliament and appointed minister in the government of France several times.
1959 - He became prime minister of the colonial government.
1960 - 1993 - He was the first President of Côte d'Ivoire.
1960 - Achieved independence, and Houphouët-Boigny was president of the constituent assembly.
1969 - He maintained an ardently anticommunist foreign policy, which included severing diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union.
