1977 - Moved to Paris at the age of 13 to acquire better education but he wasn’t able to find a good job. Until he got discovered by a fashion designer Thierry Mugler and made him a fashion model.

1994 – He played as Mobalage Ikabo in “ER.”
1997 - Hounsou landed his breakthrough role in in Steven Spielberg's "Amistad"
2000 – He had a featured role in the Oscar-winning "Gladiator"
2002 – He had a supporting role in the recreation of "Four Feathers"
2002 - He narrated an HBO drama "The Middle Passage."
2003 – with Angelina Jolie, he co-starred in "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life."
- He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Jim Sheridan's film "In America"
2005 – He held a role as a cast opposite Queen Latifah, the sexy piano-playing electrician in the comedy "Beauty Shop." He also starred in the sci-fi thriller "The Island" of Michael Bay.
2006 - Cast as Ajihad, the leader of the Varden in a fantasy film "Eragon."
- Co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in Edward Zwick's "Blood Diamond"; received a SAG nomination for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role
2007 – On the 25th of February, received an Oscar's Best Supporting Actor nomination in the movie “Blood Diamond” by Edward Zwick.
