1903 – He was born on the 1st day of October this year in Kiev, Ukraine under the Russian Empire.


1912 – He entered the Kiev Conservatory, where he was taught by Vladimir Puchalsky, Sergei Tarnowsky, and Felix Blumenfeld.


1919- He left the conservatory this year and performed the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor at his graduation.


1920- His first solo recital followed this year.


1926 – He made his first appearance outside his home country, in Berlin.


1928 – He gave his U.S. debut on January 12 of this year, in Carnegie Hall.


1930 – He made the premiere recording.


1932- He played for the first time with the conductor Arturo Toscanini in a performance of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Emperor’.


1933 – He married Toscanini’s daughter Wanda this year.


1936 – He continued to make recordings for HMV of solo piano repertoire, including his famous 1932 account of the Liszt Sonata in B minor.


1940 – He later played in Paris, London, and New York City, and it was in the United States that he eventually settled this year.


1944 – He became a United States citizen this year.


1953 – He went into retirement; he made a series of recordings in his New York townhouse, including discs of Scriabin and Clementi.


1959 – His first stereo recording, made this year, was devoted to Beethoven piano sonatas.


1962 – He embarked on a series of highly acclaimed recordings for Columbia Records.


1965 – He gave solo recitals only rarely.


1975 – He returned to RCA Victor, and made a series of live recordings until 1982.


1982 – He began using prescribed anti-depressant medications, and his playing underwent a perceptible decline.


1985 – He is no longer taking medication, returned to concertizing and recording and was back on form.


1986 – He returned to the Soviet Union to give a series of concerts in Moscow and Leningrad.


1987 – His final tour was to Europe in the spring of this year with a video recording of one of his last public recitals, Horowitz in Vienna.


1989 – He died on the 5th of November in New York of a heart attack. He was buried in the Toscanini family tomb in Cimitero Monumentale, Milan, Italy.
