1958 – Married to Christiane Krauss on August 2nd.

1965-1969 – He was a professor of political science at the Free University of Berlin.

1973 – Began his political career as a representative of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate at the federal level in Bonn.

1978-1983 – He also served as minister of culture and sport and minister of interior for the state of Baden-Württemberg.

         – Herzog became vice president of the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe.

1987 – Was named president of the Federal Constitutional Court.

1994 – He became the president of Germany.

         – Elected first Federal President after the unification of Germany, Herzog supported the process of European integration and confirmed that Germany has no claims in regard to its former lands in Eastern Europe.

1997 – Herzog was awarded along with the Czech president Václav Havel with the title of the "European Statesman of the year".
