1860 - Benjamin Ze'ev (Theodor) Herzl, born on the 2nd of May in Budapest, Hungary. He was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist who founded modern political Zionism.

1896 - From April, when the English translation of his Der Judenstaat ("The Jewish State") appeared, he became the leading spokesman for Zionism.

1897 - At considerable personal expense, he founded Die Welt of Vienna and planned the first Zionist Congress in Basel.

1898 - He began a series of diplomatic initiatives itended to build support for a Jewish country.

1901 - He met for the first time with the Sultan of Turkey, but the Sultan refused to cede Palestine to Zionists, saying, "I'd rather be penetrated by iron than see Palestine lost".

1902 - 1903 - He was invited to give evidence before the British Royal Commission on Alien Immigration.

1904 - He was elected president, a position he held until his death.

       - He died in Edlach, Lower Austria on the 3rd of July due to heart failure at age 44.
