1916 – He was born on the 26th day of March this year in Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
1933 – He ran away to sea , as a ship’s boy, then later was a fisherman on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
1935 – After serving as sailor and fireman on larger vessels, he was awarded his first command this year, and sailed around the world several times.
1959 – After his bitter divorce with Madeleine Carroll, he was awarded custody of his children. He defied a court order and sailed to Tahiti with all four children.
1960 – He married Catherine Devine McConnell.
1963 – He wrote his autobiography Wanderer, which was published in this year.
1970 – After his appearance in The Godfather, he appeared several times on NBC’s The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder where he talked about his career resurgence and how it had funded his travels and adventures around the world.
1972 – He also played the Irish police officer, Captain McCluskey, who was shot by Al Pacino, in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.
1986 – He died of prostate cancer in Sausalito, California at age 70.
