1979-1987 – Hastings served in the Washington House of Representatives, including in the capacity of Assistant Majority Leader.

1994 – Hastings was elected to the House after being defeated in a prior bid.

         – Hastings unseated incumbent Jay Inslee, who later returned to Congress as a representative from the 1st District.

2005 – On the 2nd of February, Hastings was appointed chairman of the House Ethics Committee’s newly created subcommittee investigating the congressional page program in the wake of the Mark Foley scandal.
