1940 – Valerie Harper, born on the 22nd of August in Suffern at Good Samaritan Hospital in Rockland County, New York, to a mixed Catholic/Protestant family, and raised in Oregon. She is an Emmy Award-winning American actress.

1959 – She appeared in bit parts in several films beginning with Li’l Abner, when she was a teenager.

1970 – Stardom came with television, including four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her work in "Mary Tyler Moore".

1974 – "Rhoda", in which she played the title role.

       – Has won Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year, and her "Rhoda’s Wedding" episode set that year’s ratings record.

1979 – 1980 – Her feature films include Chapter Two, Freebie and the Bean and The Last Married Couple in America.

1982 – 1983 – In television she has starred on all three networks in movies of the week, including Farrell for the People (TV) (NBC), Don’t Go to Sleep (TV) (ABC) and An Invasion of Privacy (TV) (CBS).

1986 – She also played family matriarch Valerie Hogan on the sitcom Valerie. It was renamed Valerie’s Family the following year after she abruptly left the series (following a dispute with the producers) and was replaced by Sandy Duncan.

1990 – She advocated hormone replacement therapy for the Eli Lilly company.

2000 – A project, Mary and Rhoda, was planned as a reunion series for her and her friend and longtime co-star, Mary Tyler Moore, but the project instead appeared as a made-for-TV movie on the ABC network.

2001 – She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and ran for president in the election, losing to Melissa Gilbert.
