1787 - Born on November 25th in the Upper Austrian Innviertel. The composer of the carol, Silent Night, Holy Night.

         - Gruber felt attracted to music and he took violin and organ lessons. One of Gruber’s promoters was Andreas Peterlechner, a teacher in Oberndorf, who helped him to become headmaster and organist.

1816 - He served as the organist in the church of St. Nikola in Oberndorf.

1817-1819 - Mohr’s and Gruber’s paths crossed which led to the origin of the Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night".

         - On Christmas Eve he composed his one published work, the music for the poem Silent Night by the local curate, Josef Mohr.

1829 - Gruber left Arnsdorf and Oberndorf for Berndorf and later for Hallein. There he worked as a choir leader.

1863 - Died on June 7th.
