Georgius Florentius Gregorius (Gregory of Tours)

Born: 538 AD
Died: 594 AD, at 56 years of age.

Nationality: Roman
Categories: Political Leader, Politician, Senator

538 AD - Georgius Florentius Gregorius, born into the upper stratum of Gallo-Roman society, of senatorial rank on both sides as he tells us, in Clermont, in the Auvergne region of central Gaul. He was a Gallo-Roman historian and bishop of Tours, which made him a leading prelate of Gaul. He wrote in an ungrammatical and barbarized style of late Latin; however, it has been argued that this was a deliberate ploy to ensure his works would reach a wide audience.

575 AD - At this date he had been bishop of Tours for two years.

584 AD - His second part, books V and VI, closes with Chilperic's death.

591 AD - The third part, comprising books VII to X, takes his increasingly personal account.

594 AD - Died on the 17th of November in Tours as well.
