American character actor on The Andy Griffith Show

 

Born-1935-in Jasper, Alabama 

 

Best known to audiences for his portrayal of Goober on the classic television series The Andy Griffith Show, George Lindsey was one of country comedy's most popular ambassadors for well over four decades. A native of Jasper, AL, he graduated from New York's prestigious American Theatre Wing, later appearing on Broadway in productions of All American and Wonderful Town.

 

In 1962, Lindsey relocated to Hollywood and over the next two years became a noted television character actor,

 

1964-1968- he first played the role of simple-minded gas station attendant Goober,

on The Andy Griffith Show

 

1968-1971- Mayberry R.F.D

 

1972- Lindsey began a 20-year stint as a member of the cast of Hee Haw.
