1998 - entered politics by declaring herself as the candidate for Prime Minister but her being Italian-born hindered her from getting the seat

2004 - Leader of the Opposition in the 13th Lok Sabha
- got the unanimous votes to be the head of the 19-party coalition government on May 16
- May 18, she declined to become the Prime Minister in a meeting

2005 - on May 28, she became the President of the Indian National Congress

2006 - presently the chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha
